South Carolina is a state steeped in history. It was the first state to secede from the Union and was a founding state of the Confederate States of America. The first shot that began the Civil War was fired at Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor.

A very diverse state geographically, it is located in the deep south. On the east it is bordered by the Atlantic ocean and has beautiful beaches. To the north it is somewhat mountainous and in the center it is known as the Piedmont region with sandy soil, towering pine trees and wonderful golf courses. And the Low Country is between the beaches and the Piedmont and has the fascinating saltwater marshes near the ocean.

The capitol is Columbia, home of the state university, and Charleston, another of its major cities, is a charming and interesting place to visit. Don’t miss the guided walking tours around the Battery and the historic district of Charleston. Ed Grimball’s is a good one. A boat ride out to Fort Sumter is not to be missed , full of history and exploration. There is also a Thriller Speed Boat Ride in the harbor.

On the coast you will find famous Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach, home of exciting entertainment, shows, beaches, rides and amusement parks. Broadway at the Beach is a great place to take the whole family and the Carolina Opry is highly enjoyable for those who like music of all kinds. And of course there’s the beach itself!

A quieter, more tranquil place to visit is Brookgreen Gardens, a palatial garden with acres of flowers, ancient oak trees and dramatic outdoor sculpture. Pawley’s Island, an old and charming beach area, is near here and well worth the visit.

Edisto Beach State Park is also an ideal place for the entire family. Swimming and enjoying the beach, camping and biking are available here, as are crabbing and fishing. Located on Edisto Island, it is quiet, fun and refreshing.

Other points of South Carolina interest include Patriot’s Point Naval and Wartime Museum, the largest maritime museum in the world . Here one can view the USS Yorktown and other interesting sites. And The Charleston Waterfront Park is a very special place in which to relax and enjoy.

From historic Charleston to quiet Pawley’s Island to the fun and excitement of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina has something to offer every visitor.
